“When I met Moroccan writer Mohamed Choukri in the early 1990s he suggested I should read Ginsberg, Kerouac, Burroughs, and that I absolutely should see Brion Gysin’s work. Most people, when they discover my work on calligraphy, think that this is because I’m an Arab and a Muslim. And I always tell them that, in fact, this is because I found out Brion Gysin’s work. In 2012 I dedicated one of my installations to him at the Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg. It is called Calligraphy of Fire.
