Live carte blanche to CHRISTINE EYENE
Sounding our thoughts to the West
2017, 40’00”
Supported by Making Histories Visible, University of Central Lancashire
Text and sound pieces, English
a programme exploring cameroon’s anglophone identity through culture with christine
eyene (art historian/curator), dzekashu macviban (writer/editor), elsa m’bala
(singer, composer & sound artist), bakwa magazine and tito valery (artist & radio
host). in november 2016, the resistance against the marginalisation of the english-
speaking parts of cameroon (located west of the country) was met with repression
and the shutdown of the internet for several months in those regions, jeopardizing
everyday life, the economy, education and cultural exchanges. through texts and
sound interventions, this programme reflects on how the linguistic colonial legacy
continues to affect life, culture and politics in cameroon and africa today.

An aural dissection of the way migration is coded in the use of language in European media.
(sub) is an aural dissection of the way
migration is coded in the use of language
in european media. while focusing
specifically on the way spanish official
media channels refer to the plight of
migrants in the western mediterranean,
it attempts to draw a wider perspective
on how acts of naming are used to
fictionalize conflict and de-humanize
the cultural other. in this scenario,
neither the use of language, nor the
cardinal points on a map - west, south,
east, north - are neutral or innocent.
