Multi- instrumentalist, Jordi Wheeler and Abstract Turntablist, Maria Chavez have been collaborating as a performative duo since 2015. Jordi's multi-faceted talents as a musician combines with Maria's current abstract turntablism practice creating a sonic result that is based on active listening with improvisation.
Their duo work has been presented by Documenta14 in Kassel, Germany as part of Every Time An Ear Di Soun, Cruces Espacio de Arte in Madrid, Spain and as part of the Abasement Series at Max Fish, NYC.
MARIA CHAVEZ
Born in Lima, Peru, Maria Chávez is known as an abstract turntablist, sound artist and DJ. Accidents, coincidence and failures are themes that unite her sound sculptures, installations and other works with her solo turntable performance practice.
Routledge Press chose Maria to be on the cover of the latest edition of their Electronic and Experimental textbook that is distributed widely throughout academia. The book is used in Universities and Music programs all over the world as a first year course for students interested in the world of avant garde and electronic sound practice.
Maria Chavez’s 1st book about abstract turntablism, OF TECHNIQUE: Chance Procedures on Turntable, 2012
Maria wrote her first book on her unique approach to abstract turntablism in 2012 titled, OF TECHNIQUE: Chance Procedures on Turntable (currently out of stock), a book of essays and illustrations that guide the novice turntablist to explore the world of needles and vinly through the lens of deterioration, destruction and the unexpected.
Maria regularly teaches workshops introducing students to her turntable practice all over the world and has been a research fellow with the Sound Practice Research Department of Goldsmith’s University of London since 2015.
She presents lectures on sound art, improvisation, multi-channel speaker installation practice, most recently for Rhode Island School of Design (RISD),Stony Brook University, the Contemporary Arts Museum-Houston, Berklee College-Valencia, Spain and others later in the fall/winter season.
JORDI WHEELER
Jordi Wheeler is a multi instrumentalist actively working the periphery of the NYC scene and now currently located in Spain. He works in understanding the idiosyncratic languages of individual instruments and allowing himself the freedom to pursue the immediate and the intuitive- from the bell tones of prepared guitar to the percussive drift of fingers across piano keys, he focuses on active listening, breadth of dynamic range, and timbral flexibility. He has recorded and performed internationally with Amen Dunes (on the records Freedom (Sacred Bones 2018) and Love (Sacred Bones 2014)) Mike Wexler (NYC) (most recently on Dispossession (Mexican Summer 2012) and Syntropy (three:four 2016) the abstract turntablist Maria Chavez (Lima, NYC), and Psychic Ills (NYC).
